Dinner
and Dance update (04/12/03)
Click
here for photos This year's Dinner and Dance was held at the Burlington Hotel on
Saturday 29th November. Joining us this year was Club Trustee Sir John
Trelawny, who spoke of his affection for the club, and presented members
with a framed photo picturing the club's early years at the Cannongate ramp
just East of the Hotel Imperial, some ten years before the current clubhouse
was constructed. Click here for
photo. In a follow-up meessage to members,
John said:
"Sailing was active in 1960 at Cannongate and the first
Saltwood Sailing Society burgees were produced in 1961. Since membership was
dependent on serving a one year 'apprenticeship' to prove ability as a boat
carrier etc., the club certainly dates back to 1960."
"It is particularly encouraging for both of us trustees
to see such a good spirit prevailing still and I am sure the club will go
from strength to strength. Since the first days of the Club in the early
60's things have changed and moved forward, but in the essentials none of
the members from those days would feel out of place today. We wish you every
success in the 2004 season. I shall certainly be coming down to the club to
see the sailing. Thank you all for your hospitality."

AGM
update (18/11/03)
This year's AGM was held last Saturday, commencing with a very
positive report from Commodore Antoine Breton on the excellent progress made
by HSSC this year. The meeting continued with the year's Sailing
and Windsurfing reports by Rear
Commodores Peter Wright and Phil Silver. (Click the links for the full
reports.) Also voted in were the new Comittee for
2004, and it was also passed that membership and
storage rates would remain the same for 2004. The meeting ended with the
usual lively debate and retreat to the bar!

Wimereux
- Calais Race Update (19/09/03)
(by Antoine Breton)
For the first time, HSSC comes back with a winer cup, Aran FARNES
came first in the race board class! (This upset so much the French that they
changed the rules immediatly. Next year the RACEBOARD catégory will be
limited to 7.5 m² sails!) Also, if enough competitors in France want to
race with bigger sails, an OPEN CLASS category might be created. Our Juniors
also did very well, with Oliver and Eliot well at the top of the HSSC fleet.
Too bad for their respective dads (they used to be good!) Christine and I
did'nt do too bad on Hobie Cat - 5th in our catagory, passing the last one
on the finish line by 13 seconds (over a 3 and a half hour race). We also
left behind a few Hobie Tigers and various F18s! In all, the whole week-end
was great fun. Full results
available here. Antoine

less for childrens, I think. Why not buy one and join the "where
do you wear yours?" hall of fame!
RYA
Windsurfing Championships 5th July 2003 (07/06/03)
(by
Mark Brooks)
Congratulations to all the Hythe Team for an excellent performance in the
South-East England RYA Windsurfing Championships (U17). Representing the
club at this prestigious event were Elliot Carney, Oliver Brooks, Andrew
Petts, Claudia Carney and Jack Brooks. Despite the very difficult light-wind
conditions and variable wind-shifts the Hythe team showed tremendous
determination and increasing skill. Role of honour: Oliver Brooks 1st
overall and 1st in the 6.6m class: Elliot Carney 2nd overall in the 6.6m
class. Andrew Petts 1st overall in the 3.5m class. Jack Brooks 2nd overall
in the 3.5m class. Claudia Carney '1st Girl' and 3rd overall in the 3.5m
class. (Unfortunately Hythe had no competitors in the 4.5 and 5.5m Classes.)
A special mention for our 3.5m Class competitors, who 'Cleaned-up' with all
the trophies in the 3.5m class, at their first major competition.
Hythe's valiant team celebrated their success in true style,
by mounting the walls of a bouncy castle and slaying an unsuspecting 15m
dragon found lurking in one of the pubs on the way home. Thanks to Sir
Claudia and her electrical genius (inherited no-doubt?) the dragon gasped
its last breath and the valiant heroes fled the scene of the crime. HSSC are
still recruiting T15 members. Despite appearances this is not a family show;
however there is a parental commitment to travelling for race events. Please
make the effort! I would love to put a full team of 15 juniors into the next
inter club event at Aqua Sports. Mark Brooks.

contact details, weather and news information. Now you can check out
hssc.net from the pub, beach or your armchair! The address of the new site
is pda.hssc.net

UKWA
Update (04/06/03) (by
Mark Brooks)
Great news for HSSC's young racers, Oliver Brooks (15) and Elliot Carney
(14) who competed in the U.K.W.A. British Open Racing Championships at Hove,
May 24 - 26t. The 3 day event provided Elliot and Oliver with a tremendous
experience, with all the adult and junior Raceboard fleets all starting on
the same line. This meant starting alongside the all the National
U15,U17,U19 and Olympic World Class squad members including current British
and world ranked number one, Nick Dempsey. However, undaunted by the
formidable line-up Elliot and Oliver battled their way towards the front of
the fleet, gaining confidence and success with every race. A force 4/5 wind
and choppy sea on Sunday gave the duo an opportunity to show the competition
how we do it at Hythe, picking up some valuable points, finishing in the top
quarter of the 80 strong fleet. After 8 races Elliot and Oliver were in with
a good chance for positions in the top 3. Due to a late start on Monday only
one race was held, with everything to play for our boys went out and gave it
their all. Congatulations to the boys for a tremendous performance and
helping to place HSSC on the Winsurfing Map. Elliot gained 2nd place in the
Under 15 National Junior class (6.5m Aloha). Oliver gained 3rd place in the
Under 17 Mistral Junior One Design Class (6.6m IMCO). Thanks also to 'shore
dad' and coach, Marc Carney for giving up the opportunity to race in order
to support and motivate the boys.

Windsurfing Course (22/05/03) (by
Phil Silver)
To encourage more youngsters into windsurfing we plan to run a junior
windsurfing course at the Redoubt Lake, Hythe on Friday evenings from 13th
June to 25th July (excluding 27th June) this summer. Any family or junior
member between the ages of 8 and 16 will be very welcome. Places are limited
to 16 on a first come first served basis. The 6 sessions are from 6pm until
8pm (meet at HSSC at 5:45pm latest). Buoyancy aids will be provided. The
club has a few wetsuits / long johns which can be hired @ £1.00 per
session. The cost of the course is £40.
Any adults with their own equipment will be welcome to join
us on a Friday evening at the lake (we will try to provide some instruction
& encouragement but this is 'freesailing') Cost of this will be £6 per
session (of which £5 goes to Nichols Lake). Any adult beginners will be
able to benefit from our club discount at Dover Watersports. I am trying to
put together groups of 6 for cost effective lessons at Dover. Anyone using
The Lake will need to sign a letter of indemnity. Children will need a
parent or guardian to be nominated who will be present during each course -
we can sort this out when we meet each Friday. Click here to download a
booking form in MS Word format, or contact gibson@hythe20.fsnet.co.uk

Who, on a blistering hot and windy day, represented HSSC at
Bewl -renowned for its tricky wind conditions and difficulty in competing
against tough local opposition with intimate knowledge of which way to catch
those lifts! Special mention to Elliot Carney 2nd position in the highly
competitive 6.5m class; Lucy Stewart 3rd (1st girl) in the 4.5m class;
Andrew Petts 3rd in the 3.5m class (His first event). We had no competitors
in the 5.5m Class. Congratulations to all the team for gaining 3rd place
overall.
An excellent performance from our very young and new team, three quarters of
whom had never raced before! It was quite a steep learning curve for many of
the kids, but they rose to the occasion in their new RED TEAM VESTS - well
done everyone- You were indeed hot! Click
here for photos.

Happy New
Year! (22/12/02)
It seems like the years slip by more and more quickly these days - and what
do we have to show for it? Well, we could worry about questions like that
forever, and aren't there more important things after all - like whether or
not we're having fun, enjoying life, living it to the full? If you're
reading this, chances are these things are important to you, too, and with
another fantastic summer awaiting us we have much to look forward to. HSSC
is stronger than ever and good times beckon. You may (hopefully) have
noticed an overhaul of the site's graphic design - something new and smart,
and incorporating our new Club logo. Hope you like it. See you out there.
Mat.
The Dave Bourne award for most
improved short-boarder (2 5/11/02)
Before he died at the end of 2001, Dave Bourne offered one of his
short-boards to Simon Clarke, who at the time, he hadn't really even spoken
to before. This act of kindness and generosity, typical to Dave, prompted
Simon to use the board in a most imaginative manner. At the recent Dinner
and Dance, Simon told HSSC members that it was his intention to use the
board as an award to the most improved short-boarder each year. The board
would remain on display at HSSC, to be used by the winner for a year, after
which it would be re-awarded. In this manner, we may remember Dave, whilst
offering incentive to new windsurfers. In this its first year, the Dave
Bourne board was awarded to Jane Mackenzie. Click
here for photo of the presentation.
