New Club Logo (20/11/02)
At the recent AGM it was unanimously voted that HSSC should adopt a new logo. The reasons for the change were: (1) the original three seahorse design was intended to stand for "Saltwood Sailing Society" which is no longer the club's name; (2) A standard version of the old logo was not available, with a variety of seahorse designs precluding a cohesive image across different media; (3) a new logo would serve the club well in reflecting its modern, forward thinking ethos. The new logo does, however, maintain tradition by keeping the seahorse theme, using two seahorses to represent the two S's in HSSC. The new logo will be phased in as new documents are created, as well as integrated into the HSSC web site. Look out also for new club tee-shirts bearing the logo and coming soon.. 2002 Sailing Report (by Gill Gough) (20/11/02)
My season as rear commodore started well with a well supported winter series – my thanks go to those hardy souls who raced week after week throughout November and December and also to those windsurfers who joined in from time to time. Our winter racing ended with a rum race on Boxing day when Tom Coley finished the race in first place to claim his bottle of rum – I sure that everyone who supported us both on and off the water will agree it was great to see so many people enjoying the club atmosphere in the winter

Thursday evening racing was very popular this year although I think I’m right in saying that it was only the attraction of the racing that encouraged people to come and enjoy the club – thanks to all the girls that helped out with the cooking on these summer evenings. Also thanks to all those who supported us even when the weather was so unkind to us. Sunday afternoon racing has suffered badly this year due to the weather although a total of 20 members have taken part in the racing throughout the summer.

The RNLI race had to be postponed by a week due to the forecast of gales but on the rescheduled weekend the sun shone and we had an excellent day with close racing for the pennant and a fun race that saw even very young members taking to boats and joining in with the piracy that is the ball race.  All in all a lot of fun for everyone and to top it all we managed to raise £180 for the RNLI.  Thanks to everyone for taking part and to all those who helped with the galley. The Ship Race in July was a tremendous success with 52 vessels signing on to make the journey down to Sandgate .  Thanks to those who kindly gave up the sailing to provide the essential safety cover and also to Pam Wire and Karin Clarke for their help with the timing and distribution of the chocs and drinks.

Despite the appalling weather and the various road closures we did manage to run the training sessions at Dover and we are pleased to see a few of our trainees have now purchased boats and are joining in with our racing.  Thanks to all those instructors and powerboat drivers who gave their time to help us over the six weeks. Special thanks also must go to John Hope who not only provided the support for the training at Dover over the six weeks but has also been willing to provide support and encouragement throughout the year – we look forward to continuing the close working relationship that has been built up between the two organisations over the coming year.

Several of our sailors took part in the racing at the Dover Regatta and managed to come home with a large percentage of the silverware – with approx 20,000 people attending this event this is obviously great publicity for the club.  I think however the most memorable moment of the weekend must be the arrival of two pf our members, in a Hobie cat, at the harbour entrance just as the Air Sea Rescue helicopter arrived overhead for its display.  With thousands of pairs of eyes trained on the Harbour what better moment than to make an entrance!!!!  There weren’t however quite so many to welcome them back to Hythe when they eventually made it. Not quite such a successful day when some of more dedicated sailors made they journey to Herne Bay for the Man of Kent event.  With near gale force winds they were not to be deterred and flew the flag for HSSC – no trophies this time but I am pleased to say at least they all come back with boats and bodies in one piece – their state of mind I will not question.  Well done lads – we were proud of you.

This year has seen a noticeable growth in dinghy sailing at Hythe and I now consider that we have a firm base on which to build the section in the coming year. Finally I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in the role of rear Commodore Sailing this year – particularly those regular sailors who have turned up week in week out regardless of the weather and I hope that you will all continue to give that support to my successor in the coming year. GILL.

Team 15 update (by Mark Brooks) (24/7/02)
Team 15 is a new initiative from the RYA to promote Youth windsurfer racing. It has received a big launch this year and is beginning to attract significant sponsorship from Gul, Tushingham and Windsurfer Magazine. There is a dedicated web site www.team15.org.uk  HSSC Team 15 Eligibility: Age 16 or under on 31st December 2002 Race in following classes: 3.5m, 4.5m, 5.5m or 6.5m rigs- any board for Team 15.

There were a series of 4 inter-club events Sat 27April ~ Bewl Windsurfing Sun 19 May ~ AquaSports Sat 15 June ~ Ardingly Activity Centre Sat 13 July ~ At Hythe&Saltwood Sailing Club South East Zone Inter-club Championship Results Sat 13 July ~ At Hythe&Saltwood Sailing Club. This was the final in the Team 15 series Excellent performances were given by Hythe Hotshots, Elliot Carney, Kimberly Clare and Oliver Brooks. Flat waters produced by a fresh northerly wind provided favourable conditions for the visiting lake sailors from all over the South East. Elliot and Oliver would have preferred a strong South Westerly wind, with accompanying waves to challenge the competition. Oliver 1st in the 5.5m class with six 1st places making him the overall event winner Elliot 2nd in the 4.5m class, Kimberly Clarke 3rd in 5.5m class and 1st girl, an excellent performance for her 1st race event this year. South East Zone inter-club championship, overall results 4.5m Class Elliot narrowly missed 1st place, having won 2 out of three events before the HSSC Team15 Event. The controversial introduction of a clearly oversized Bat sail by his only serious rival in the competition denied Elliot the opportunity for fair competition in the final 2 events. However an excellent performance was given by Elliot, despite the odds, gaining 2nd place overall in the most competitive fleet and a signed rash vest donated by Robby Swift. Well done Elliot for a tremendous performance in representing your club throughout the series! 5.5m Class Oliver produced no less than 20 first places from 20 races, four 1st place event trophies and four times best individual competitor. An outstanding performance throughout the South East Zone inter-club series, maintaining an unbeaten record which afforded him the title of overall SE Zone series Individual Champion and the prizes he desperately wanted to win. a signed slalom fun board donated by Robby Swift and a new waist harness donated by Graeme Fuller. All 1st places receive a new waist harness thanks to Graeme's generosity. Further prizes were generously donated by Steve Burton from Activ.

Mid Season Newsletter (by Gill Gough and Antoine Breton) (24/7/02)
As the season is now supposedly well underway although no one seems to have told the weather I thought it was time that we let everyone know how things are going and what else is happening. The training at Dover has been well supported and we hope to see these new members practising their new found skills at the Club in the coming weeks. Windsurfers hold their racing on a Tuesday night and the dinghy sailors meet on a Thursday Evening. Both sections hold races and meals are available afterwards. Dinghy sailors also meet on a Sunday afternoon although improver sessions will be held on a Sunday morning so turn up at around 10 – 10.30am and our instructors will help you in any way they can. Afternoon racing is at 2.30pm with additional races weather permitting. We hope that we will be able to hold some beginners racing and reintroduce the parent and child racing on a Sunday morning. The Galley will be manned on most Sundays through out the summer. If anyone would be willing to spare a couple of hours on a Sunday to help in the Galley we would be most grateful – alternatively if you could make a cake or something similar please let us know. The RNLI day was very well supported despite the fact that the weather was against us and we had to postpone but in the end I think everyone had a very enjoyable day. Thanks must go to everyone who worked so hard to make the day a success. £180 was given to the RNLI and they have asked for their thanks to be passed to all those who gave so generously and made them feel so welcome.

Ship Race Update (by Jane Mackenzie) (24/7/02)
Over 30 sailing boats and 20 windsurfers took part in the annual Ship Race. This is the largest event in the club's calender and each year more and more sailors from HSSC and elsewhere take part. The race started at 12.30pm from the Hythe and Saltwood Sailing Club in Hythe and finished at the Ship Inn at Sandgate. For the 5th year in a row good weather and a steady wind enabled all those who competed to complete the course. The event was overlooked by the inshore lifeboat crew and 3 of the club's own rescue boats. Stewart and Wendy Wiffen of the Ship Inn provided an excellent BBQ and plenty of refreshments on the fleets arrival. Stewart, the Landlord at the Ship Inn has sponsored the event for the last 5 years. The event is held in memory of Stewart's son who was a member of the sailing club.

The race attracted all ages from juniors, the youngest being 6, to older members in their 60s. For most it was a fun event to enjoy the challenge of a long distance race. Within the sailors the winners were as follows: Junior Event - 1st Joseph Thomas, 2nd Michael Gough and Chris Adams, 3rd Lucy Stewart. Adults Fast Handicap - 1st Richard George, 2nd Peter Wright, 3rd Rob Nicholas. Adults Slow Handicap - 1st Mark Brooks, 2nd Nick Johannsen, 3rd John Mortimer. The windsurfing winners were as follows: Junior Event - 1st Elliott Carney, 2nd Alex Silver, 3rd Andrew Petts. Open Class - 1st Graham Fuller, 2nd Barry Farnes, 3rd Dave Finch. One Design - 1st Marc Carney, 2nd Richard Homewood, 3rd Boyd Garrard.

Important Message for Club Members with e-mail (5/7/02)
As you may know, HSSC uses e-mail as its primary method of disseminating news about club events to its membership. Using e-mail is fast, convenient, and cost-effective to members. If we do not have your correct e-mail address, you will be missing out on important Club news. Maintaining our database is difficult, and its easy to get e-mail addresses wrong. Hence, if you have not been getting Club e-mails, the chances are that we don't have your correct address (even if you put it on your membership form). In this case, please click here to send it to us. Many thanks. Mat Mackenzie.

Windsurfing News (by Antoine Breton) (22/5/02)
Next Week-end is a big windsurfing Week-end for the club : Sat 25th of May : HSSC event at Deal. Open to experiened long board windsurfers, a long distance cruising on flat water in Sandwich bay, launching from Deal. It's impossible to forecast one week in advance what the wind condition will be and there is no point going there unless the wind is N, NE, E, SE or S. So I suggest that we meet at the club Saturday at 12:00 to decide according to weather condition and forecast.

Sun 26th of may : our traditional RNLI race at the club. 10:00 to start races around lunch time. Then the next event not to miss is the "IMCO - encore" Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd of June : The famous group of great ex Imco racers will compete at the club with us, BBQ and Bar open Saturday evening. Well known as a great ambiance event. Then, Sun 30th of June : Hythe Royal Jubilee races : to participate to the Hythe Royal Jubilee Festival, the club will organized at Hythe long board races. Cups have been organised for "Open Class", "Junior", and "One Design". Hope to see you all there at these events.

Finally, Eurotunnel has confirmed to me sponsorship for the 2 Windsurfing WE in September in France. (Sun the 8/9 Wimereux Calais Raid, and a full Week-end 28 th and 29 th of Sep for "what we fancy to do" on Sat and long board races on Sun). See you on the beach. Antoine.

HSSC Cleans up at Team 15 event (10/5/02)
It was our first Team 15 windsurfing event at Bewl water on Saturday 27th April, and juniors from HSSC firmly asserted their superiority with a fantastic set of results. Representing HSSC were Oliver Brooks, Elliot Carney, Lucy Stewart and James Homewood. Elliot Carney won 4 first places in the 4.5m class, easily enough to make him the overall class winner. And the same for Oliver Brooks, who took 4 firsts in the 5.5m class, again becoming overall class winner. Oliver's success was also sufficient for him to be awarded the title of overall event winner. Lucy Steward did extremely well in her second race event, and has been invited to join the SE Zone squad. James also did extremely well in his first 3.5, class event. So an excellent performance by all. HSSC members extend their congratulations to you all, and a big thank you to Mark Brooks (Training and Youth Development Officer, and Team 15 Coach.) for his help in training these new windsurfers. Click here for some great photos of the event.

HSSC needed 5 team members to stand a chance of retaining the T15 SE Zone trophy won last year. The photograph of last year's team is currently being used in national advertising campaign - Elliot Oliver and Lucy are famous! Your club needs you! we are looking out for any would be T15 windsurfers to complete our successful team - anyone willing to attempt a triangular course, training given. Contact Mark Brooks for more details. We hope to be running regular Team 15 training on Saturday Mornings 10.30am-12.00 at the Redoubt Lake (West Hythe) along with our Team 15 race coaches.

The afternoon is a family events, beginning with a DIY BBQ, then fun using anything powered by wind - kites, speedsails, landyachts, mountain boards driven by kites, etc, etc. If you haven't yet tried a speedsail, now is the time to have a go. There will also be beach soccer, sand-castles, cricket - basically whatever you like for the children. Don't forget your windbreak!

New frontage (26/3/02)
Those of you at last year's AGM will recall that it was decided to replace the extensive glass frontage of the Clubhouse with new double-glazed units. Not only will this help keep the Club insulated and looking smart, but will prevent further water damage the leaky original windows were causing. This work has now been completed, and looks fantastic. So why not make it an excuse for your first visit to the Club this year?!

Publicity Message from Jane Mackenzie (12/1/02)
Happy New Year to you all, Just a note to let those of you who missed the New Year's event know all about it. What can I say? It was an excellent evening, helped fantastic organisation from the new Social Committee. The theme of Famous People brought some weird and wonderful characters out of the woodwork. It was like the Oscars, Brit Awards and Variety Club Awards all rolled into one! There were some of the cast from Eastenders, ABBA, several Brave Hearts/Patsys/Lara Crofts, Ali G, Tom Jones, the Flintstones, Blues Brothers and so many more. It was so funny to see so many famous people all dancing and talking to each other. We even had someone the Americans have been trying to find for some time now, dancing at our club! The food was an amazing spread, when we were told that nibbles would be provided, we had no idea what a lovely variety of food there would be, which I am sure took a considerable amount of time to prepare. Well done to all those who helped put that all together. I hear many an hour was spent by the committee at the club planning the event, obviously all that group bonding in the bar paid off! Martin, as the leader of our social committee, did a great job with the Disco and karaoke. The midnight was counted in by Martin who then gave us just the best Irish music to dance in the New Year to. If this is the taste of things to come this year, we are in for a really excellent set of events.

I must now do my bit and promote the next events for you to enjoy: Quiz Night, Sat 26th January, £1 entry, up to 8 in a team. Valentines Party, Sat 16th February, "Grease" theme. St Patrick's Day celebration, Saturday 16th March, 2.30 pm start. £3.00 per person to include Irish Stew and Martin's famous Irish-style entertainment. See you soon. Jane.

Into 2002 we go! (1/12/01)
Club members... Its not quite the New yet, but in preparation, the "News" and "Calendars" web pages for 2001 have now been archived and new pages put in place. Details will be put on line as soon as I receive them. 2001 was a very positive year for the Club, with the Windsurfing section remaining hugely strong, lots of junior training taking place, and the Sailing section taking off big time. Did you know that they are still out there sailing on Sunday afternoons! Well done to you all. With a new "Sailing Committee" now in place, 2002 promises to be even better. The 2002 social scene is also set to be a great one with Martin Munnelly at the helm of a new Social Committee with some great events in the pipeline. Yes, a BIG New Year party is planned! Details soon.

The recent AGM saw the introduction of many new committee members, see our Committee Gallery. Members also voted unanimously for a new glass frontage to the Clubhouse, which will prevent water damage to the changing rooms underneath, keep us all warm on those chilly days, and look pretty swish as well! Most recently was our Dinner and Dance at the Burlington, which was fantastic fun for all, and an opportunity to formally thank key members for their contributions over the past year, and especially outgoing Commodore Mark Brooks for his dedication and hard work in developing the Club during his three-year term. See you on the beach in the Spring, and on the web all year round! - Mat Mackenzie.
