OTHER: Other Sports based at HSSC

Aside from all that sailing and windsurfing, many of our members enjoy other sports using the club as a meeting place. Here are just a few.

Rollerblading on Marine
Parade outside HSSC

Rollerblading
Those familiar with the Hythe seafront will appreciate the smooth, wide promenade, recently resurfaced, which is ideal for roller-blading. An increasing number of our members are now taking advantage of this facility, and can often be seen whizzing around, some pushing buggies!

Speedsailing
And then there's speedsailing! This is getting so popular with members down on the nearby huge sandy beaches of Dymchurch, Littlestone and Camber, that we've got a whole page devoted to it in the windsurfing section. Click here to have a look.

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding
Hot, windless summer days never fail us, either. A few of our members now have speedboats, and wakeboarding and waterskiing are becoming quite popular. Click here for some cool photos. (Please note that HSSC is primarily a sailing club, and is not suitable for new members wishing to join with a view to using powered craft. Speedboats are launched from the club on a discretionary basis, and only for regular sailing or windsurfing members.)

Kayaking

Kayaking
Another great way to enjoy those windless days: some of our members regularly take to the water in Kayaks. Great fun in the surf, ot just to cruise up and down the coast.

HSSC Mountain bike race

Mountain Biking
The area around Hythe is excellent for mountain biking, with numerous bridleways and other off-road trails. From leisurely jaunts alongside the Royal Military Canal onto the Romney Marsh, to grueling ascents up the Lympne and Peene hills. For a quite unique experience, try the path down through the middle of Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. Its quite a treat to bike past the elephants and bison. We have to date organised three race events, open to club members and the general public alike. The first was held in October 1997, and consisted of a 30 mile trek, with approximately 30% off road. In response to the fact that this ride was really only suited to regular riders, our second race in May 1998 was shortened to 20 miles, with the off-road component increased to approximately 60%. This was a very successful event, with over 100 riders and a great party in the evening afterwards. Our most recent race was on the same date last year, and we kept the same highly successful route. Keep an eye on this site for future events.

Snowboarding
Whilst many of our windsurfing members sail all year round, this hard core is also fond of hitting the slopes on their snowboards. Last winter we organised numerous snowboard evenings, where excited board-heads could get together for a drink, get stoked watching videos, and check out some of the latest equipment courtesy of Steve Burton from Activ. Members have also organised plenty of trips to Europe to get some snow for real.
