HSSC News Update – January 2019

A (belated) very happy new year to you! I hope you had a great Christmas and probably have forgotten about it all now as you wade into January and work & family commitments.

We had another great year in 2018 at HSSC and are very proud of our successes. Thank you to everyone that helped out and participated last year. Our club would not be the success it is without you. With your continued support, we look forward to making 2019 even better at HSSC.

We have recently planned our social calendar for this year (as emailed to you and also available on our events page), and we have an expanded new team of kind members who have offered to help out to help organise our famous social events.  I am afraid that we need more helpers though! If we cannot get the commitment, the events will not take place… Please come back to me or one of the committee if you can spare an hour or two to help out during the year. (If we all muck in, it’s not a chore and everyone has a better club with more going on).

Robbie Burns
Burns Night is the first social event coming up at the end of the month – Fri 25th Jan at 7.30pm will be the time we kick off our celebrations at the club. The cost to include a meal (Haggis, sausages, neeps, tatties, onion gravy and the obligatory tot of whiskey) is £7.50 per head. Please contact Morag or any of the committee for tickets. It is always a packed night, so booking early is again recommended!

HSSC Membership
We will soon be in touch regarding your membership for the year. Please remember that to get the appropriate membership, (full details will be on the form) you need to subscribe and pay by March 1st 2019. Our membership rates have not changed from last year. Please do be careful to enter an active email address on the membership form- this email is the one that you will receive all the news and events for the club.

March Maintenance
With the first phase of our new club extension going ahead this Spring, we will need to clear out the windsurfing garage with the brown roller door to enable some of the working operations. We would use this as an opportunity to re-look at our entire storage of windsurf boards and SUPS, and we will be asking (please) for help with this from you all along with the annual maintenance plan that the club holds each weekend in March where everyone mucks in with some basic maintenance and repairs at HSSC for just a couple of hours from each member. Please do come down at some point and help out. Every effort is really appreciated.

Galley
We are proud that we managed to keep open our Galley every Sunday  last year that we raced. We are looking for old and new volunteers please to help staff the galley on Sundays this year when the season kicks off at Easter.  The website has a ‘Galley Duty Calendar’ that has the facility for you to view the available Sundays for galley duty this year and simply add your name to a vacant Sunday on the calendar – you can do this at www.hssc.net/galley-duty-calendar/.The password is as provided to you previously by email. If you can please commit to at least one Sunday, we should be able to have another great year of superb coffees, bacon rolls and cakes! We need 2 staff per Sunday and HCC assist with offering us a 1/3rd helper. All the supplies will be ordered in advance for you. We cannot provide this invaluable service to our members without your support- any questions, please email me directly –  commodore@hssc.net

Our sailing season will kick off just late March- the windsurfers, SUPers, & Kayakers brave the waters as soon as the clocks change in March. The dinghy sailors 1st race will probably be the first Sunday in April. The timetable of races and roster for sailing duties will be released in the next few weeks. We will keep you updated via Facebook and the website for all our sports activities.

Hythe Cycling Club
A note from HCC Chair, Richard Foster.

Hythe Cycling Club wishes HSSC a very Happy New Year. We’re delighted to be linked with the Sailing Club and several sailors, windsurfers and SUPers, already regularly cycle with us. Our rides start from the Sailing Club, at 9am every Sunday and 3 groups of riders of varying capabilities, cycle between 40 and 50 miles, returning to the Sailing Club for a coffee and to watch the Sailing !

If you think you’d like to unleash that budding Geraint Thomas in you, or would just like to enjoy the health benefits of cycling, please have a look at our website, speak to any of our members, or email cylcleclub2015@gmail.com for more details.

Activ Cycles are offering all our members a 50% discount this week only on all their cycling clothing! Please feel free to pop down there to grab a bargain!

We are planning loads of events this year at HSSC that will include lots of parties, BBQs, an RYA Push The Boat Out weekend, the Ship Inn race, RNLI race, quizzes and many other events that we will keep you updated about.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the beach and using our fantastic club. With very best wishes for a cracking year ahead, on behalf of your committee,

Chris Addison
