Team 15 - HSSC Storms to Victory!! (8/11/01) by Mark Brooks
Fresh from competing in storm force winds at the National Youth and Masters Windsurfing Finals in Portland Harbour, Weymouth last weekend. Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club's junior U15 youth development squad stormed to victory in the South East England 'Team 15'inter-club competition, held at Bewl Reservoir on Saturday 22nd September. Oldest member Oliver Brooks (South East Zone Aloha '103' class Champion 2001) stamped his mark by securing 4 first places in the 5.5m class, Oliver's superior board speed surprised even the 6.5m class competitors as he led the entire fleet on a number of occasions. In the 4.5m class, Elliot Carney and team rival Anthony Gillan battled over first and second place all day. Overall winner of the 4.5m class was decided in the last race, with anxious spectators pacing the shoreline as Elliot (placed 3rd in the Junior One Design National championships 2001) and Anthony (National Junior One Design Champion 2001) lapped other club competitors in their determination to reach the finish line. One slight mistake by Anthony was all it took for Elliot to race home to victory. Lucy Stewart gave a distinguished performance in her debut race competition, closely following her team-mates in the 4.5m class to achieve 3rd and 4th places. The was no doubt in anyone's mind as HSSC's team stepped forward as this year's undisputed South East Zone 'Team 15' Champions.

Club Commodore and Team 15 coach Mark Brooks said,' We are very proud of our youngsters' outstanding achievements in their first year of competing at regional and national level. Hythe is now recognised as one of the top clubs in the country. Our thanks to all the club instructors, coaches, members and sponsors: Saga and The Ship Inn, whose voluntary contributions have opened new horizons in the lives of these children. We look forward to next season and the continual growth of our 30 strong youth development squad.

30th Anniversary Party!! 22nd September 2001 (9/8/01)
HSSC becomes the ripe old age old 30 this weekend (about time it started acting it), and to celebrate we have a very special event planned. The evening of Saturday the 22nd September will be the time that members new and old alike come to the Club for a super-dooper cocktail party. The theme is "Posh frocks and cocktail outfits" but don't let that fool you into thinking this will be a formal event. Those who were there at Simon and Ira's evening of debauchery this weekend will know that there's a bit more to one of our cocktail dos than pina-coladas and polite conversation! Be there or be forever regretful. Pay your respects to the old man of Marine Parade. Snacks to whet your whistles, cocktails to loosen the juices, music to arouse and excite, and - oh yes - free entry! 7.30 onwards. See you there.

HSSC Awarded National Title (12/8/01)
Following in the wake of the remarkable success of the British Sailing Team at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club has been awarded the title of 'Volvo RYA Champion Club' in recognition of their first class youth sailing coaching and race training programmes. 70 new members were trained this year alone. The scheme is part of the RYA Youth Initiative that has received £1 million per annum support from Sport England for four years. "This is great news for Hythe & Saltwood Sailing Club, and particularly for our youth members" said Antoine Breton, Rear Commodore for Windsurfing at the Club. "We have all been working hard with the RYA to establish a strong performance of coaching and race training for our young members, and its great that our efforts have been recognised. We must thank Mark Brooks our Club Commodore, ably assisted by Willie Wire, who have made this award possible.

Presenting a plaque confirming Champion Club Status to the members on behalf of Volvo Car UK, Les King, Senior Sales Consultant of local dealers, Lipscomb Volvo Centres in Ashford said "The Volvo RYA Champion Club scheme is a gold standard for sailing clubs, recognising those with a commitment to youth sailing and race coaching. It aims to encourage young sailors and windsurfers, for which this club has excellent facilities to develop at the grass roots level, to stay in the sport and learn to compete. Ultimately the goal is to increase Britain's medal wins in international regatta, building on our successes at the Olympic Games in Sydney. As a supporter of sport and youth development at Lipscomb, we will look at ways we may be able to help the Club develop its membership further to reach these goals". Click here for photos of presentation.

Clubs seeking to be awarded this status must meet the following tough criteria set by the RYA: (1) Youth membership must be open and affordable; (2) Male and female racing coaches for youth Sailors; (3) Two junior and youth fleets of dinghies or boards available for youth members; (4) A social programme for young members; (5) Racing and competitive opportunities for young members. The Volvo RYA Champion Club Scheme is part of the broad Volvo sponsorship supporting young sailors and windsurfers in the UK, from club level sailing right up to the highest level of international competition - the annual Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship.

Ship Race Update (1/8/01) By Jane Mackenzie
I hope you all enjoyed the Ship Race at the weekend. It was excellent to see so many sailors of all ages on the water. The good weather seemed to bring the whole club out. It was a shame that the wind to died, but the rescue boats did an amazing job getting everyone to the Ship. As usual Stewart and Wendy did a brilliant BBQ for us all. We are so lucky to have so many people willing to give up their time to help out at these events. Willy Wire did a great job organising the racing and so many others did their bit to make the day enjoyable and safe. It was handy having the inshore lifeboat along helping us too. We didn't think we would have to use them on such a sunny day, but their towing ability came in handy! If you want to get a bit more involved with the club and have just joined, helping out at the events is a great way to get to know the other members. If you are interested see Simon Clark and he will let you know what is coming up and what still needs doing around the club. I am sure that this year has seen more members helping out and really joining in with the club spirit. Without the help of the members these events wouldn't be possible and every little bit helps.

Summer Party Update and Ship Race (24/7/01) By Jane Mackenzie
Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great time this weekend at Jessica's surprise party on Friday then the Summer Party on Saturday. Some were looking a bit the worse for wear by Sunday! Both were such good events and I am sure the pictures of both will go down in the web site's hall of fame!. The food on both evenings was the best. The curry on Saturday was especially good. If you want to send a message to Chris Rutt and her team to thank them, I am sure they will appreciate it; such a lot of hard work went into the evening. Mark Carney also organised a great bunch of games for the 'children' to have fun on, big and small ones alike! We were so lucky with the weather ,with the rain staying off and several enjoying the sunrise with a surf at 5.00am in the morning! The next big club event is this weekend, Sunday 29th July: The Ship Race for both windsurfers and sailors of any level. We start at the club and finish at the Ship in Sandgate for a BBQ and prize giving. Stuart Wiffen puts the BBQ on for all the participants free of charge. We are so lucky to have him help out the club in this way, as he also provides the prizes for the event, so make sure you show him your appreciation on Sunday.

Summer Party (10/7/01)
The much anticipated HSSC Summer Party has been changed to Saturday 21st July. The evening will include presentations of certificates from our training courses, commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets for the party are £7.50 adults, £5.00 children. Highlights will include: Laser Battleground, Bucking Bronco, Surf machine, and of course plenty of music and dancing. A must for all those who attended this extravaganza last year.

HSSC Youth Team Update (10/7/01) By Mark Brooks
Great results now confirmed for HSSC youth team at Bewl last week. Elliot Carney was first Junior One Design, Oliver Brooks was first 4.5m class, Tom Stewart was 3rd Aloha class. Excellent news for these enthusiastic youngsters. Congratulations also to those who completed their first race. This was before Saturday's SOUTH EAST ZONE training! All the other juniors had a great time either learning or training. The event was a great success for all who attended and has the added bonus of placing HSSC on the map for a centre providing youngsters with an excellent standard of training - As a Champion club this recent development has been a great early bonus. The overnight campers also had a great fire? and wonderful breakfast in the early morning sun. An excellent trip out.

Scorpion Open update, 23/24 June (26/6/01) By Richard Elston
Scorpions from Notts County S.C., from Castle Cove S.C. and from clubs in between travelled to Hythe for a two day Open Meeting on the sea in Hythe Bay. Ideal weather conditions prevailed on Saturday afternoon with a fresh easterly force 4 blowing across the bay, some waves and loads of sun for the spectators on the beach. Race Officer Andy Gibson set an excellent course taking advantage of the wind and wave conditions to allow some exciting three-sail reaching on the off wind legs. Racing got off to a prompt start on Saturday afternoon. National Champion John Mursell and Nick Keast in Bottyburp the Barbarian (1936) led the way to the windward mark followed by Nigel Potter and Matt Grant in 1974 and Sandra McDine and Kate Gurner in Popsy (1852). Close racing down the reaches brought Barry and Linda Wolfenden in Harry the Halibut (1938) into third place, Nigel Potter and Matt Grant second with Mursell out in front at the finish. Sandra McDine finished fourth and Phil and Jane White in Frolic (1932) fifth. Race two, sailed back to back, followed a similar pattern with Mursell taking an early lead that he held to the finish followed by the Wolfendens (1938) and Phil and Jane White in Frolic (1932). Nigel Potter was late for the start after helping another competitor with a gear failure and retired after a course infringement. Hythe & Saltwood S.C. provided an excellent barbecue that evening to revive the tired sailors and followed that with a disco and Karaoke evening. All the visitors and club members had a great time.

On Sunday in race 3, delayed until the south-easterly sea breeze set in at force 2/3, local helm Rob Smith with Chris Wayman in Dark Knight (1737) led the first round followed by the Wolfendens (1938) and the Whites (1932). After some very close racing in a strengthening tide the Wolfendens (1938) finished in first, the Whites (1932) second and Mursell and Keast (1936) third with Smith and Wayman (1737) dropping to fourth. Sandra McDine and Kate Gurner (1852) took fifth place with Tony Rowe and Pete Hazelwood in The Bees Knees (1937) sixth. Race 4 sailed in a strong tide running to windward was won by the Whites (1932) after Smith and Wayman 1737 had led for the first two rounds. Behind them in some close tactical racing the Wolfendens were third and Mursell and Keast fourth. Tony Rowe and Pete Hazelwood (1937) were fifth and Nigel Potter and Matt Grant sixth. The Race Officer decided to include the fifth race to complete the advertised programme and this was to be the decider for the overall position. Smith and Wayman (1737) led from the start with Mursell and Keast (1936) in hot pursuit, Tony Rowe and Pete Hazelwood (1937) lying third and the Whites fourth at the end of the first round. As the breeze slackened the tide played a prominent role but Smith and Wayman held their lead to finish first with Mursell and Keast a close second. Barry and Linda Wolfenden moved up to third at the finish from their earlier fifth. Phil and Jane White after lying third for a while slipped back to fourth. John Mursell and Nick Keast in 1936 Bottyburp the Barbarian scored an overall win for the Open Meeting. They were 2.25 points clear from Barry and Linda Wolfenden in 1938 Harry the Halibut and Phil and Jane White in 1932 Frolic on a tie with Rob Smith and Chris Wayman in 1737 Dark Knight only a point behind.

Junior windsurfing at Bewl (11/6/01) By Andy Gibson
A reminder that 'Bewl Junior Friday Club' have invited all our juniors to windsurf with them on Friday evening 22/06/01 and Saturday 23rd. Start is 1600 hrs Friday. Last year this was a fantastic trip out - Bewl is a beautiful venue, normally only available for windsurfing at great expense. Bewl club went out of their way to make us very welcome with a BBQ and a well organised session on the water. The best part of all was being able to camp in the sailing club grounds next to the lake, and we are invited to do this again this year despite our reputation for insomnia (the locals will know who not to camp next to!!). I can guarantee a great familly day out! Bewl would like to know in advance how many to expect - all under 16s are welcome of any level - there will be racing for the more advanced- we can organise transport of our club boards to the lake if this causes you a problem. Bewl is near Lamberhurst (this side of Tunbridge Wells - about 1.5 hours drive in a slow van) Reply to me asap if you want to go. - Andy

Live weather station and web cam now on-line! (02/6/01)
The long-awaited web-based weather station was today installed at the Club, and is now on-line. Please check out WeatherCentral, and click on the HYTHE transmitter icon. This service provides you with live wind-speed and direction from a roof-top weather station at the Club, updated every 30 minutes. As if that is not enough, there is also a live 3 second video clip of the sea outside the Club, so you can see what the conditions are right now, wherever you are! This service is provided free of charge by www.boatastic.com, and in return I hope you will take the opportunity to visit their excellent web site for loads of information on all aspects of sailing, boat auctions, extensive chandlery and much more. A big thank you also goes to Graeme Fuller who has been working with Boatastic.com to bring us this service. Please help us to increase traffic through our web site by telling anyone who might be interested in this facility.

Margate Hook Adventure, Sunday 20th May (14/5/01)
A grand day out at Minnis Bay, North Kent, meeting the freindly team of the small Minnis Bay windsurfing club. There will also be a "bring your own" BBQ on the beach. Depending on the weather, different activities will take place. LIGHT WIND: A long-board excursion to Margate Hook, which is a sand bar approximately 3 miles off the coast. A family fun day on the beach. MORE WIND: Same as above but also short board races from the beach to Margate buoy. (Minnis bay is a great place to practice your gybes, being far less choppy than Hythe.)

On the Saturday (19th), the weather forecast will be displayed at the Club (or check it out here on the web) to help you select your kit for the Sunday (alternatively, you could just take everything!) On the Sunday we will meet at Minnis Bay car park from 12.00 noon. For those who wish to windsurf to the sand bar, beach launching is at 3.30 pm. (Low tide is at 5.15 pm. The tide will be running from East to West, reversing 2 hours after high tide to become West to East.) Note that parking on the seafront is free, but it is much better to use the car par park nearer the beach, as a grassy area with plently of space is available for rigging up. There are also toilet facilities and is nearer to the windsurfing club. If you can't find a place to park, at least go there to unload your kit. Please note that no rescue boat cover is organised, as this is only a "sail together" event. Participants therefore sail at their own risk.

A Sunny Weekend! (14/5/01)
A long awaited return to a sunny weekend lazing around on the beach! The weekend of 12/13 May saw the first hot weather of the year, and the first beach days for nine months! Club members certainly made the most of it, with the beach outside the Club littered with families and children, and plenty of craft afloat, too. The Saturday saw a continuation of the Northeasterly winds, but enough to temp out lots of windsurfers in the sunshine. A last minute BBQ at the Club was suggested for the evening, with the large turnout reinforcing just how much we have all missed those great summers days. Sunday saw little wind, but enough to see a small flotilla of sailing boats on the water once again. A great day to help the children improve their skills whilst having fun.
It wasn't all lazing around either. This was also a planned maintenance weekend, with a team of willing volunteers organised by Vice Commodore Simon Clarke painting and creosoting, as well as felting the dinghy park store roof. A big  thanks to Simon and his crew!

Wedding Bells for Alastaire and Gill (11/4/01)
A comprehensive turnout of HSSC members were there to celebrate the marriage of Alastaire and Gill, who tied the knott at Port Lympne on Saturday 7th April. A charming afternoon ceremony was followed in the evening by a riotous Glam Rock style reception... and, of course, we have photographic evidence - here and here!

Land Yachting Day update (8/2/01)
This year's winter event, landyachting at Greatstone with Kirawee Landyachts was a huge success. Click here and here for photos. Light winds in the morning whetted everyone's need for speed, before the wind kindly obliged towards the end of the afternoon - and boy do those landyachts shift! A variety of eager members could be seen zipping over the sands, and especially well done to our junior members who sailed superbly given the lively nature of these craft, and with a good regard for safety. Only one minor incident occurred (involving a high speed wipe-out and collision), and that was - erm - me! Anyway, less of that. Click here to see Commodore Mark modeling the latest in safety gear, which he is now expects Club members to wear at all times - especially in the bar.
