Windsurfers Leaving Party
(6/11/1999)
Hythe and Saltwood Sailing Club rocks!!! It happened once before when a group of
windsurfers left for down under, and now comes the sequel, with a total of four of our
shortboarders giving up the grim British weather for sunshine wind and waves in Oz and NZ
(can't think why). The evening saw the Club packed with people, a disco with live DJ, and
a nasty surprise for Leigh! Check out the photographic evidence!
Ship Race and board
sponsorship (1/8/99)
25/7/99 saw the 1999 Ship Long Distance Race in full swing. A fantastic turnout this year
of both boards and boats in beautiful sunny weather and a light easterly breeze. Setting
off at 2.00pm, various watercraft, bikes and even one skateboard, reached The Ship
Pub around 3.00 for a great bar-be-que laid on by Landlord Stewart Griffin. Stewart
sponsors the race, providing the food and trophies. This year Stewart excelled
himself by being the first to sponsor a new windsurf board for teaching children. The
sponsorship arrangement has been newly set up by commodore Mark Brooks to provide
equipment for training with a view to expanding the club's operations. In return for a
business sail logo, the sponsor is asked to raise half the money to buy a craft, which the
club then matches. The Aloha class craft was presented to the club by Stewart during the
prize-giving ceremony. Needless to say, a great time was had by all, culminating in a
second and rather impromptu bar-be-que that evening at the club, courtesy of Mark and
Jessica Brooks.
Peter Hart training day
(12/6/99)
On Tuesday 22nd June, world-renowned windsurf guru Peter Hart will yet again be at the
club for another training day. With his wealth of windsurfing experience, this really is
not to be missed. The course costs £35 for the day. Contact ACTIV Folkestone on (01303)
240110 for more details. Space is limited to 10 places, so you had better be quick! In the
evening, Peter and Dave Hackford will be presenting an evening of windsurfing, including
tips and quizzes. This is completely free, so don't miss out.
Big Blue Go Boating Weekend
(12/6/99)
Saturday and Sunday 26th-27th June is the weekend that H&SSC club gets involved in the
national national Big Blue Go Boating Weekend. We have our Scorpion Open event on the
Sunday, Windsurf racing on the Saturday, as well as a rescue demonstration by the RNLI,
not to mention the Tennis tournament and Bar-be-que. There will be lots of people about,
so do come along and enjoy the day. To promote the sports, the club will also be happy to
help any non-members to try windsurfing or sailing free of charge.
Board Store (2/5/99)
Bad news and good news. The new board store was going to cost a whole lot more than
anticipated, so has been axed for now. The good news is that 16 new board racks are now
available in the existing rescue boat garage. Can't be bothered to lug your kit to the
beach? Then grab a rack!
Membership Drive (2/5/99)
Ally Pally went very well, and we are now close to our first training course in Dover
Harbour in June. Remember that its free for new members with membership. Contact club
secretaru Adrian Metherell (see committee page) for more details.
Bike Race (2/5/99)
Wow! Our third annual mountain bike race was a roaring success, attracting riders from all
over, from serious athletes to casual weekend cyclists out for a gentle plod. The weather
was lovely and the course dry, so we saw some great times from the faster people. Fun in
the evening, too at the party and prizegiving. Not attending these dos? You've got to ask
yoursevles what you're missing!
The New Season (2/5/99)
The bank holiday weekend also saw the first "beach days" of the season, with 7.0
blasting on the Monday, and last minute BBQs on both the Saturday and the Monday. Don't
miss out - get down to the club and check things out. Anyway, its now 5.3 weather so I'm
off to a board meeting (so to speak)!
