On Saturday the 9th August 2003, several adventurous HSSC members sailed from Deal to the Goodwin Sands, the stretch of sandbars lying 6 miles off the east coast of Kent. Shipwrecks were once frequent at Goodwin as the shifting sands do not permit the construction of lighthouses. Thankfully there are now several lightships and numerous buoys marking the area. Traditionally, the Sands were once a fertile isle called Lomea, the property of Godwin, earl of Wessex; Lomea was submerged by a great storm in the late 11th century. Antoine, Colin and Simon also sailed on Friday evening from HSSC, aiming to reach Deal before dusk, but the wind died and they were forced to stop at Dover. On Saturday Peter Wright on his Laser, and Phil and Dick on BEANO joined the fleet to launch from Deal. They reached the sands at 17:00 and spent 1 hour watching sealions and enjoying the special magic of this secluded place. A great thanks also goes out to Downs Sailing club for their help and organisation. (And Antoine was also attacked by a shark!)
